Insecure Security

During our System Administration and Integration lecture today our teacher came with a rather funny and understandable analogy concerning having high encryption on connections between two hosts, and at the same time low physical and general security on both hosts.

"It is like using an armored truck for transporting information between two people living in cardboard boxes."

:-) I think most of us found that quite funny.

Fundanemt 2.1 bug status

For the last couple of weeks we, the Fundanemt team, has been working on removing the remaining bugs prior to the 2.1 release (due beginning of March). That made me want to keep track of how many and which bugs needed to be fixed before we have a finished release. Our bug tracking tool Mantis allow us to create a tracking bug for each release and define what bugs need to be fixed before the release is ready. The list of related bugs can though become quite long and Mantis at the moment does not allow us to get a list of bugs not resolved yet.

So I decided to write a little C# program that fetches the Fundanemt 2.1 tracking bug on the Mantis site (stored in XHTML format) and searches through it using XPATH to get a list of all the remaining bugs. And finally present it in a nice print out with summary and list of the bugs.

The bug status page can be viewed at http://qte.fundanemt.com/bugstatus.txt

The current summary looks like:

Summary:
- New Bugs: 20
- Assigned Bugs: 9
- Feedback Bugs: 3
- Acknowledged Bugs: 2

Total: 34

Early spring cleaning

I have had a lot on my mind since before Christmas, and have not really had the "time" nor energy to start cleaning my apartment thoroughly, throwing out old papers, rearranging books on my bookshelf (they had been laying on the floor since my last post sigh).

This weekend it was time to get an early start on spring cleaning (since I will be away or really busy during this spring). This springs cleaning included
  • Vacuum cleaning the floor
  • In depth cleaning of my small kitchen
  • Rearranged stuff on my bookshelf and throw a lot of the papers away. It is now possible to actually find something on it :-)
  • Finally I cleaned the wheel of my mouse, now I can scroll even faster!!111 wohoo.

Virtual bookshelf

I finally decided to look through and rearrange the books I have on my bookshelf. After having dusted off some of the books I came up with the idea of listing them on my website, mostly in order to have a reference list but maybe I will add small reviews and ratings of each book.

That got me thinking, what books should I buy when I am done reading the ones I bought recently. Currently my wish-list contain a few.

Quick Mozilla proxy settings

Blog image
I use my laptop at at least two locations each day with various network connectivity. At home I have a direct connection to the Internet and at the university I use a proxy server in order to surf the web. Thus each and every time I move my laptop, I need to change proxy settings.

A long time ago I got tired of it and tried to set-up automatic proxy detection using a proxy.pac file - but failed. To night I finally found a workable solution - by accident of course.

Right clicking on the connection icon in mozilla (in the lower right corner next to the lock) will bring up a 3 item context menu allowing the user to quickly change between none, manual and automatic proxy. This just made my day.
